A video call from someone in a police or CBI uniform. They say a parcel in your name held drugs or fake passports, and that you must stay on the call until it is resolved.
No police force in India arrests anyone over a video call, and none will ask you to transfer money to clear your name.
Hang up. Call the person’s office on a number you looked up yourself. Report on cybercrime.gov.in or 1930.
A refund, a cashback, or payment for something you listed for sale arrives as a request you have to approve with your PIN.
You never enter your UPI PIN to receive money. Entering it always sends money out.
Decline the request. If you are selling something, ask the buyer to pay to your UPI ID instead.
An SMS saying your bank account, SIM or wallet will be blocked tonight unless you tap a link and update your KYC.
The deadline is the scam. No bank closes an account the same evening over a form, and none does KYC over a link in an SMS.
Delete it. If you’re unsure, open your bank’s own app or visit the branch.
A message about a parcel that could not be delivered, with a small fee to reschedule and a link that looks close enough to the courier’s real site.
The fee. Couriers reschedule for free, and they don’t take card details over a link.
Track the parcel from the courier’s own app. Report the number as spam.
An instant loan app approves a small amount in minutes, then demands repayment with interest that was never disclosed, and threatens to message your contacts.
It asked for your full contact list and photo gallery at install. A regulated lender never needs either.
Revoke the app’s permissions, uninstall it, and report to the RBI Sachet portal and 1930. The threats are illegal.
An SMS or call saying your electricity will be cut tonight because last month’s bill did not update, with a number to call.
A real disconnection notice comes from your discom with an account number on it, and never asks you to install a remote-access app.
Check your bill in the discom’s own app. Never install an app someone asks you to install while on a call.

Call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in immediately — the first few hours matter most for recovery. Tell the bank in the same call. Then keep the messages; do not delete anything.
